Susie’s new album, Kalypso, is a diverse collection
of songs that beautifully showcase her unique vocal style and
song-writing ability. Best described as “world folk,” Susie’s music
is a fusion of genres that embrace folk, pop-rock, country, and
bluegrass. Her original compositions are deeply personal, boldly
imaginative, and disturbingly provocative. Delving into the realms
of love, fantasy, erotica, and mysticism, Susie breathes passion and
beauty into each of her songs. The versatility of her vocal style
allows her to sing like an angel—or a seductress. From sweet and
ethereal to rich and seductive, the euphonic tenor of Susie’s voice
is sure to please the ear and pull the heartstrings.
In performance, Susie’s repertoire features an assortment of
original songs, as well as obscure and popular cover songs. Many of
the latter are melodies that have been written by her contemporaries
in Texas. She has performed in venues across Texas, New Mexico,
Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York.
Originally from New Hampshire, Susie moved to Texas in 1984 and now
resides in Horseshoe Bay with her husband, Gene, and their two sons.
Her singing career began at the age of 7 in church and school
choirs. When 12, she received a Yamaha guitar from a pawn shop and,
after learning the basics, accompanied herself in a talent show. A
year later, her father built a Heathkit organ and she enrolled in
lessons. During her childhood, she emulated pop/folk legends Emmylou
Harris, Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon, Sheryl Crow, and Linda Ronstadt.
She later became enamored with the musical genius of Texas
singer-songwriter Shake Russell. Susie and her husband have since
forged a close friendship with Shake, who has been Susie’s mentor
and is a guest artist on her new CD.
A Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Texas-San
Antonio, Susie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and is
currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree at the Bread Loaf School
of English in Middlebury, Vermont. Susie’s studies in literature
have been of immense value to her, both as a lyricist and a
vocalist. She also writes poetry and is working on a novel. A former
marathon runner, Susie continues to make running an integral part of
her daily routine.
